If there is such a thing as perfection and flawless in this universe, then this Kdrama of the year is it- That Winter the Wind Blows is the most beautiful kdrama I've ever watched! Its indescribable until one actually watches it. It was love at first sight, when I read that Jo In Sung, the handsomest man in my universe signed up as lead, his very first drama 2 years after his mandatory army stint ended in May 2011 and 8 years after the kdrama Spring Day. It was love at first sight when Song Hye Kyo was confirmed as the main lead actress. It was love at first sight when the first scene gradually appeared on screen, a vast landscape of snow and a solitary tree.

And my love affair with That Winter The Wind Blows continues as I fall for the O2 couple the Oxygen couple Oh Soo the fake brother and Oh Young the blind heiress in a story of faux incest
unconsummated, of love that blooms between two people, both abandoned, both wanting to die, wanting to live, wanting to create beautiful memories in the chaos of their lives.

I want both to die in the end, so that they can finally be together on the other side. It would just be too cruel for one to go and the other to live on without the other. In a way they complete each other unknowingly. Both change for the good as they touch each others lives. Yes, writer nim Noh Hye Kyung just let them go, let them drink the euthanasia pill together or let them live even in obscurity so that they can finally be happy after all the pathos they experienced. I love the cinematography and production design and the color of the scenes, its like a wasteland, cold. forlorn, empty, yet the splotches of colors promise the renewal of spring. I love how the PD nim takes close ups of the leads and other actors, so that every emotion that registers on their beautiful faces is priceless. I feel like I'm part of the drama, only I am silent, like the fly on the wall, a voyeur extraordinaire, drinking in every second of their lives.

Take this voice over of Oh Soo in Ep 11 while he is frolicking in the snow with Oh Young making beautiful memories with her before she has her surgery.
"For the first time, I was as joyful as a child. I wasn't scared of Moo-chul's knife, either. For the first time, I didn't consider my thirty years of life as being unfair. For the first time, it felt like the world was fair. I don't want to forget being with Young in this moment, so when I take Moo-chul's knife, I should never feel that it's unfair. I remind myself of that hundreds and thousands of times, but there are still moments when I'm afraid. Then I'll think of this again. Up to this moment today, being endlessly afraid of death… Young, who is in front of me… I will never think of my life as unfair. Right now, I'm happy. That's enough."

If that isn't heart wrenching, I don't know what is. This role definitely earns Jo In Sung the title best actor in the universe, not my words alone but that of the staff.

Song Hye Kyo is luminous and brilliant as the blind chaebol heiress, so childlike but at the same time so street smart, trusting no one and always so vulnerable. The supporting cast not to be outdone, give it their very best! I am mesmerized by the story of a man who wants to live and a woman who wants to die. Now some screencaps from Ep 1-11 to remember the drama by.
And the kiss after so many almost kisses, when it finally happens is so pure,
so emotional on the part of Oh Soo, a man so caught up in his love for another
for the first time in his life that he was actually crying when he gently kissed Oh
Young asleep. and then she opened her eyes.
I am gonna quote Softly here ofhttp://soulsrebel.wordpress.com/2013/03/14/that-winter-the-wind-blows-e11/from her blog called Cadence as she recapped live, Ep 11 of That Winter The Wind Blows as she captured the essence of the drama.

"This drama is a testament to the beauty that lies within the chaos and confusion – ready to make its presence known. Just like his kiss, it was biding its time till it could no longer be denied. How miraculous is it that Young finally caught up to Soo and now both will have to deal with their feelings for each other. That's what that kiss did – it leveled the playing field for their love.*it's not the kiss that is going to take her by surprise – it's going to be how she feels inside. She is going to know for certain this is what a first kiss should have felt like – with the wave of emotions that come with the perfect kiss from someone who loves her and someone she loves in return. That instinct that it felt right is going to surprise her."

Writer Noh Hye Kyung and PDnim Kim Kyu Tae have brought to life characters so mature, with raw emotions, so flawed but so real, and I await their redemption, when they are finally free from the chains that
bound them in their short but painful lives. The ost are partly what makes the scenes even more memorable and meaningful. And here is one by Gummy- Snowflower/SnowFlake.
I have obsessions and addictions in dramaland, but this one beats them all. It's a drama I will rewatch and treasure and it will never grow old.

Now this scene is one of my favorites in ep. 8 when Oh Soo brings Oh Young up to the top of the mountain, piggybacking her all the way up.And they listen to what sounds like a thousand crystal bells ringing only its the frozen icicles on the branches of the snow clad trees, clinking in the wind, and then he back hugs her and she in turn embraces him. I guess that's partly the raison de etre of the drama's title.

  • Let me make this clear, I did not like the k-drama Flower Boy Ramyun Shop but watched all 16 episodes because like Secret Garden I started it already and somewhere in one of the episodes was a one-minute shower scene of a lead actor that just got out of the army that made it all worth watching. So here's my chat with ELLÉLY & Adele over athttp://2400express.wordpress.com, my home for deconstructing ( omg totally stealing dramabeans description here) flailing about asian dramas with the funniest, wittiest, drama critic cum online chingu. The epic saguek Sunkyungkwan Scandal brought ELLÉLY and I together online. But I'm just posting my thoughts, for her thoughts please visit her blog and be amazed! BTW, spoiler alert! You've been warned so please please read but at your own risk !

Hey there gurl. Long time no chat. I thought FBRS was gonna be my crack du jour like SKKS because damyun I love Jung Il Woo. But then again my first drama with him was the fusion sageuk The Return of Iljimae so I'm stuck in that period drama still drooling over his hotness.FBRS had so much potential primarily because of the hot flower boys and its about food glorious food, ok its ramyun, but its still food. I think this drama peaked at Ep 5 & 6 precisely because of the above posted glistening post-military abs and body of Lee Ki Woo. He's really morphed into a hottie since my first encounter with him in the movie The Classic where Jo In Sung slayed me with his looks! Too bad his character is so underdeveloped but I still jumped on the Kang Hyuk- Eun Bi ship because I have it bad – ya know- the second lead syndrome. I'm a sucker for the sweet, considerate, romantic, charming , ideal second lead, always. Reference- Shining Inheritance. I hate arrogant selfish chaebol heirs, even if they are the lead in any drama. So I'm sinking with that ship. Its highly improbable in real life that someone like Eun Bi will attract all these good looking young boys. She really has nothing going for her, not money, looks, career, intelligence or whatever. And hey someone as arrogant , self centered and selfish as Chi soo is not going to change overnight or even during the run of the drama for love. A leopard does not change its spots easily. But this is kdramalalaland and the writers can always insert a time jump or whatever to create the illusion that yes our hero has changed in the name of love. I'm meandering even after watching Ep 11 and its not getting any better despite the raves and flail of rabid fans of the drama. But I'm gonna stick to the bitter end cause I've lasted this far.And Jung Il Woo playing a 19 year old high school student can sure kiss- reference ep. 11 that's why I've endured and will until the final episode. Shallow me, signing off.

Chingu, you always crack me up. We both need a new hobby or a life outside of dramaland if our idea of a good time is watching a 1-minute long shower scene of some actor who just got out of the army.Sigh! See you sometime on Twitter.

Chingu, I watched until the finale, Lee& Ki Woo never got a chance to show off hisamazing abs again after Ep 5 & 6 but there were lots of hotter than hell moments when he showed off his romantic side. But Jung Il Woo true to form morphed into a maturechaebol heir for the sake of love. Its a parody all right and Eun bi baby did a role reversal and "saved & protected" Chisoo from whatever! I laughed at Adele's comments coz yeah, there were lots of hilarious moments. But I guess I just didn't get it! The comments I read after the finale were mostly about wanting a happy ending for Kyang Hyuk, Lee Ki woo's character. So many fangurls & bois sank with that ship.

Adele like you I was touched by that episode in FBRS where the partners outdid themselves making ramyun keeping in mind their partner's needs, wants or lack of it. But I still give this drama a 6.5. I was really excited about it but along the way it just went pfft. I'm not oblivious to the brilliance of the parodies portrayed in FBRS, but for me it turned out to be another Secret Garden. But I still thank the drama gods for Lee Ki Woo. I met Ellély because of SKKS online. I was so addicted to the drama that I was on soompi , viki and some other forum fangirling like crazy, even watching SKKS raw and I actually had the gumption to do recaps with my non-existent knowledge of Korean. I'm so glad Jung Il Woo is going to be in another fusion sageuk where he belongs, at least for this fangurl.

Killer abs of Lee Ki Woo below!!!! Whoot!

My verdict is in:
k-drama The Moon Embraces the Sun- totally cracktastic. Cliffhanger 101 at every episode is sucking me into the blackhole of this fantasy sageuk. Loved the young Crown Prince Lee Hwon played by my child actor love Yeo Jin Goo, boy this boy is gonna go places. Now that the adult cast has taken over, its even more addicting. Kim Soo Hyun smolders in the role of cold King, so I’m on the main leads ship for this one. And somewhere in cyberspace some fans are translating the novel or excerpts of it into english and its lovely just lovely.

Dream High 2 is one long music video! still watching after 2 episodes for the lulz.

Wild Romance- dropped it after one episode, You know why? Too loud, too noisy, too angry!

Shut up Flower Boy Band- I don't know it doesn't seem real. I find the bad boys story kinda deliberate, meant to shock more than entertain. Will I stay? Its a big maybe.

j-dorama

Hungry- Still watching it cause I’m a foodie and its got eye candies galore and yesh I still love Osamu Mukai though his acting rivals the honey drenched ham on the menu.

Strawberry Night- Shunin or Himekawa san, the princess ass kicking detective leading an all male detective team. More realistic than the Boss which delved into the lives of the police misfits. Loving every single gory infused case focused episode of Strawberry Night.

Lucky 7- totally disappointed with the slow pacing but will hang on for the love of Nanako( who’s in each episode for a total of 2 minutes), MatsuJun, Eita et.al. The plot revolves around a freeter who finally finds a job but he’s got a marshmallow heart so he goes way beyond the line of duty.

Yes I love weepies, not the weeping willows, but the dramas and movies that tug at the heart and make my tear ducts overflow. Here is my shortlist of weepies, which is not even a fraction of a longer list. I swear I will one day come out with a complete list w/ a really short review of all the asian dramas and films I've watched. So drama gods give me more days in the week and more hours in a day to do this.

J-dorama/film
I watched Takuya Kimura and the dogs in Antartica in that epic Nankyoku Tairiku [2011]and wept like a banshee over my christmas eggnog.

And its sexy Takuya Kimura again making me cry in Battleship Yamato[2010]. I finished half a tissue box on this one.

And Jin Akanishi made me cry again and again as I rewatched Bandage [2009] raw and w/ subs by Newshfan 6 times. Its that 12 minute long sayonara pre-kiss, kiss and post kiss scene that Jin and Kie Kitano filmed in one take where Jin's soulful singing of Genki that really made me sob uncontrollably. I 've lost track of how many buckets, boxes of tissues and hankies for this movie.

Byakuyako-Journey under the Midnight Sun[2006] w/ Yamada Takuyaki and Ayase Haruka- the perfect twisted tale of first love, perversion and obsession that I watched during those white nights. I cried enough to fill 5 buckets!

Sekai no Chuushin de, Ai wo Sakebu -Crying out Love, in the Centre of the World[2004]. Omg I'm a sucker for pure love and this one had Ayase Haruka and Yamada Takuyaki again as 17 year olds who were so pure, so beautiful and so in love but one was so sick and finally so dead. I give this one dozen wet hankies.

These two j-doramas, twisted, tragic, dark, made me love the japanese sense of melodrama!
Jin season 1[2009] & 2[2011]. Just cried over the beauty of the storyline of the time traveling doctor and the beautiful cinematography. Its like a Japanese painting come to life. A 6  wet hankies drama especially for Season 2.

K-drama
Stairway to Heaven [2004]-  the very first 20 episode Makjang I watched 3 times with Kwong Sang Woo as Song-ju  and Choi Ji Woo as Jung-suh as childhood sweethearts , meant to be together forever but fate intervened and they got separated. It had everything, a dread disease, chaebol heirs, amnesia, evil step mother, evil siblings, a vicious second lead stealing the love of the male lead,  a second lead male in love with the first female lead, separation, and true love. Lost count of the wet hankies for this drama as well. But I remember going to school with swollen eyes from staying up late to watch and crying my eyes out. After this drama, makjang weepies had no effect on me whatsoever.

April Snow, the 2005 korean romance film starring  Baek Yoon Joon or Yoonsama and Son Ye Jin both married but not to each other who met at the hospital when their respective spouses met an accident while having an affair. I just love the cinematography of the movie and its ending. Make that one bucket of tears.

The Moon that embraces the Sun [2012] currently airing, this fantasy fusion saguek is my crack du saison. I love it the way I was addicted to Sungkyunkwan Scandal with Park Yoochun in 2010. The first 6 episodes with the child/teen actors really mesmerized me cause  it had so many squeal inducing & weepy moments. I soaked more than 12 yellow hankies with my precious tears in Episodes 5 & 6 over the acting of Yeo Jin Goo as Lee Hwon the Crown Prince and his fated to love you but not meant to be destiny with Yeon U his Crown Princess. I predict this will be a 12 wet hankie drama for me.

Et  voila, here are three videos with excerpts from Bandage and The Moon that embraces the Sun.

My choices for K-drama to watch – Dream High 2 cause I loved DH1 and I want to see how actress Kang Sora survives in a drama dominated by k-idols. Only down side Kahi of After School. I find her too old for a k-idol ( I know life is cruel and mean) or maybe its just because she use to be Mickey Yoochun’s cuddling buddy. The Moon Embraces the Sun cause I’m a fusion sageuk junkie and its by the SKKS team and I can’t resist the flower boy pull of the two main leads ( still meh about the leading ladies).Wild Romance because I could use some in my life right now ( hides from hubby who is a darling) no really I like the two leads for the shallowest reasons.
For j-dorama, I’m skipping the taiga this year again, since I haven’t finished Ryomanden which was epic in my drama list. Hungry because I love food and Osamu Mukai since I first saw him in that Hey Say Jump drama of high school kids headlined by the obiquitous it boy of JE Yamada kun. Am I the only fangurl who loved the movie Paradise Kiss because I thought Osamu Mukai as George totally rocked and had an amazing chemistry with Keiko Kitagawa. Ok so I’m the only one ( goes into a corner to sulk).Strawberry Nights cause I love detective stories and this one is headlined by a woman ( yey for gender sensitive castings) and Lucky Seven , not because of the obvious reasons like Matsujun and Eita but because I haven’t watched Nanako in a drama for the longest time. So there you have it peeps. This doesn’t auger well for my New Year’s Resolution to get a life outside of dramalaland. Happy New Year 2012 Dragon Year!

I love pretty boys ♥but I love them manly not gurlie. Sexy, naughty, funny and cool, bad boys drive me wild but only if they are virtual. In real life, I like them geeky and nerdy but funny and witty, brilliant and gentle with a wild side. I'm marrying jpop jrocker japanese actor idol singer Jin Akanishi in an alternative universe but sssshhhhh don't tell that to my hubby.
